Founded in 2007, The White Bus Ltd is a Southend-based company providing film, video production, exhibition services and events.

We are based at The Old Waterworks in Southend, where our archive is home to nearly 3,000 reels of 16mm and 35mm film comprising over 270 British feature films and hundreds of short films, documentaries and animation, including the most complete collection of the works of iconic director Lindsay Anderson, whose drama documentary, The White Bus, which inspired our company name.

Our most high-profile events are​ Southend-on-Sea Film Festival and Horror-on-Sea Film Festival which, over the years have grown to be the largest of their kind in Essex. Other events include sunday films at The Palace Theatre, Westcliff and free summer screenings in conjunction with Big Screen Southend. At The Old Waterworks we hold a season of relaxed screenings for children, monthly Cult Nights in partnership with Alone in the Dark: Over a Century of Stalk and Slash book and weekly Secret Cinema screenings from our archive.

​Company Director and founder, Paul Cotgrove also Secretary to The Lindsay Anderson Foundation, has a proven record of success in a variety of film industry appointments which have demanded top quality management, training, knowledge and interpersonal skills. Having served his time as a negative cutter and film treatment technician he spent ten years as Technical Manager in the British Council Films and Television Department – while also taking the time, among many other projects, to produce, write and direct a 35mm horror film, Green Fingers.

Paul is a huge film fan and is passionate about promoting independent film, particularly local to Southend, at both film festivals. His practical experience and his extensive network of talented industry professionals enable him to offer consultancy services and practical advice.​​

2007
THE WHITE BUS
The White Bus Ltd was founded in October 2007 to provide film and video production, education and exhibition services. They set up base in Radio House, Southend-on-Sea.
2009
SOUTHEND FILM FESTIVAL LAUNCHED
The White Bus moved to new premises and was contracted by Southend Borough Council to stage a local Film Festival. This proved very successful and SBC continued the contract for three years. They also contracted White Bus to hold relaxed screenings for children under the Short Breaks initiative.
2012
WHITE BUS TAKE OVER SOUTHEND FILM FESTIVAL
Due to its huge success, The White Bus continued organisation of the Southend Film Festival when the SBC contract ended. The event was now firmly on the calendar continued to grow.
2013
HORROR-ON-SEA LAUNCHED
Following the success and growth of the Southend Film Festival, White Bus launched Horror-on-Sea Film Festival initially to create business during the quieter January months. The festival included a Zombie Walk on Southend Pier. The same year White Bus were also approached by Big Screen Southend to screen free summer films outdoors at the Forum.
2018
SOUTHEND FILM FESTIVAL 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
2018 saw the 10th anniversary of the Southend Film Festival. This was linked for the festival, in association with The Lindsay Anderson Foundation, with the 50th anniversary screening of the iconic British feature film if..., directed by Lindsay Anderson.
2023
10 BLOODY YEARS OF HORROR-ON-SEA
2023 saw another 10 year anniversary for Horror-on-Sea. The festival has grown and grown over the years and now has a huge following of dedicated fans who attend every year. Now added to the festival is the Video Shop, Cos players and a variety of dealers selling horror related merchandise.
